School of Visual Arts
Instructor: Irina Lee – ilee3@sva.edu
In this course, you will learn to think differently. Projects are experimental and will be based in a variety of mediums (photography, video, hand-drawn, craft). The format of the course is part lecture, part studio. There will be in-class presentations, discussions and critiques, as well as guest lecturers. There will also be projects where you will be working hands-on in class.
All students will be REQUIRED TO USE THEIR SCHOOL EMAIL ACCOUNT. Check it daily. Any information that is provided through the course blog or the SVA email account that you miss will count against you.
Requirements:
READING & WATCHING
There will be a series of on-line content you are required to review. The topics will be discussed in class. EVERYONE is required to talk.
TYPE SPECIMENS
Every week you are required to bring in found typography that you love. At the end of the semester, you will be required to submit a type specimen book of your inspiration. This will be a part of your final grade.
You will engage in four projects during the semester (maybe more depending on time). During each project record your process from start to finish. On the last day you will submit a PDF of all work completed in the course. Process materials and your Type Specimen book should also be included.
Attendance
If you miss more than 3 classes, it is unlikely you will receive a passing grade.
BE ON TIME. If you are late to class 3 times, this counts as 1 absence.
If you miss a project deadline, your final grade will be reduced.
If you are sick or have an emergency, you’ll still be accountable for the assignments.
Grades
Methods of assessment will include projects, attendance and class participation. Projects will be graded on effectiveness of concept, skill of execution, deadline adherence, and presentation. Active participation in class is required.
You will receive one final grade at the end of the semester. Your final semester grade is made up of the following:
35% Assignments
30% Final Project
15% Final Exam
10% Midterm Exam
10% Participation, attendance
To get an A, you must (1) show excellent work exceeding all requirements and expectations each week, and (2) be active in all class discussions and critiques. You must attend each class. There will be no makeup for a missed class. If you miss an assignment deadline without prior approval, you will receive a zero for the assignment.
